Clinical Evaluation of Aluminium Acetylglycyrrhetic Acid in the Treatment of Gastritis and Peptic Ulcers

Abstract
Aluminum acetylglycyrrhetic acid (Oriens¢ç) is an insoluble salt of acetylglycyrrhetic acid, showing anti-inflammatory, and scarhastening effect, as well as a marked stimulating effect on epithelial and mucous growth without aldosterone-mimetic sodium retaining effect, which can be seen in the glycyrrhetic acid.
The purpose of the present study is to assess the clinical efficacy of Oriens¢ç in patients with gastritis and peptic ulcer. Symptomatic improvement, changes in ulcer niche by gastrofiberscope and side effects were evaluated in 30 patients with gastritis (erosive and superficial) and in 60 patients with peptic ulcer (gastric and duodenal). The dosage adopted was 300 mg, taken as three doses of two tablets each about one hour before meals. All patients were treated to 4 weeks consecutively.
Excellent symptomatic response was obtained after first week treatment. At the end of treatment, vomiting and burning sensation were completely relieved and epigastric pain and discomfort were disappeared in more than ninety percent of patients.
The erosive gastritis were healed in 12 (80%) patients and improved in 3 (20%), and the superficial gastritis were healed in total patients.
The gastric ulcer were healed in 20 (57%) patients and improved in 12 (34%) while 3 (9%) patients revealed ulcer lesions unchanged. The duodenal ulcer were healed in 13 (52%) patients and improved in 10 (40%) while in two patients (8%) the ulcer crater persisted after 4 weeks treatment. There were no differences in the healing rate between ulcer locations as well as between ulcer shapes.
Sodium retention, K loss and increases in blood pressure and changes in body weight were not found in the present study. Transaminase and creatinine were also unchanged after treatment.
It is concluded that Oriens¢ç is a new gastritis and ulcer regimen with protect of gastromucosal membrane, enhancing defensive mechanism and anti-secretory effect without causing adverse effects such as edema, hypokalemia and hypertension.
